Please dispose of all trash and recycling in containers. Cell Phones . Please do not make or receive phone calls while inside the library. Headphones are required for use of audio on any library or personal devices. See library staff if you need to borrow headphones. Computer Use . Computers in the library are for the use of Harbor High students, as well as Harbor High faculty and staff. Classes in session with a teacher have priority for use of the computer lab and Chrome cart. All students are expected to follow the guidelines of the Student Technology Acceptable Use Agreement. Drinks . Covered drinks may be brought into the library. Food . Consuming food is prohibited in the library. Please speak to library staff regarding exceptions to this rule. School-provided snacks are permitted during supervised Learning Center hours. Library books . The loan period for most library materials for students is 6 weeks with an option to renew for an additional 15 days. Materials must be brought into the library to renew. Library materials more than 3 weeks overdue may be charged for and billed. Students who have lost or damaged materials are sometimes allowed, by special arrangement, to complete community service hours in the library to cover the costs. Noise . The Harbor High Library is not a completely quiet place. In general, patrons may converse in normal speaking tones, but are expected to be respectful of students needing a quiet environment to study and any requests by library staff. Student library accounts . Students can log in to see what library books are currently checked out on their accounts in the Harbor High Library catalog . Login with your Harbor High student ID number; no password is required. Unfortunately, textbook information is not currently available online. Please contact library staff for assistance. Textbooks . Books for class-use are due when no longer required by the teacher; or the day of the final, whichever comes first. Textbooks that are overdue may be charged for and billed. Peer Tutoring Peer Tutoring Everybody Wins In our Peer Tutoring program, we're built something that helps everyone: Tutees get low-stakes workshop time to engage with curriculum with supportive peers. Tutors are trained in teaching & communication techniques, and they get to delve deeper into a curriculum area which particularly interests them. See an overview of the district-wide program at Harbor as well as all our middle & high schools. Proven Results There's a great value in receiving help from your peers. We've seen incredible results from Peer Tutoring, in helping students develop their strengths and gain confidence in challenging areas of curriculum. Group Work We offer peer tutoring in small groups to help students collaborate over challenges, which helps to make it less intimidating. It helps also to let a sense of fun guide group work. And 1-on-1 Individual sessions in the Library allow Tutors and Tutees to build working relationships. It helps to learn from someone you know, from someone who has recently had the same class as you. Avid What is Avid? AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an internationally recognized program designed to prepare students for success in colleges and universities. AVID students enroll in college preparatory classes and in an AVID elective class. The AVID curriculum focuses on developing the study skills and academic skills necessary for success in high school and beyond. The Harbor High School AVID program offers college preparatory activities, skill development, career building, personal mentoring, and group tutoring. Who can be in AVID? Students who are in AVID: Want to be in the program Have the potential and the desire to go to college Are serious about succeeding in school Possess individual determination and a sense of responsibility Have a 2.0-3.5 GPA Have good attendance Have a good behavior record Have average to high standardized test scores AVID students have a very high success rate . Overall, they perform better in school and are accepted to more colleges and universities. Just look at the data: How do I enroll in AVID? Talk to your counselor! What will I do in an AVID class? Talk to your counselor! Skill Development: You will practice skills such as note taking, organization, time management, and test-taking. You will also improve academic skills in the following areas: reading, writing, public speaking, and critical thinking. College Preparatory Activities: You will learn about a variety of colleges and universities through guest speakers, field trips, and research. You will also learn about the requirements for getting into specific colleges and universities. Personal Mentoring: Your AVID teacher will monitor your progress and help you set future goals at individual conferences. Your AVID teacher will also communicate with your other teachers and act as an advocate on your behalf. Tutoring: Twice weekly, you will work in tutorial groups with a college or student-trained tutor to go over difficult material and study for tests. Career Building: You will explore career options through research to determine what education level is required for specific careers. Regular guest speakers will share their professional experiences and careers with the class. Classroom Community: You will participate in many community building activities with you classmates, where hopefully, you will build strong relationships and learn to trust each other. You will have the opportunity to improve your interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.
