Avid What is Avid? AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an internationally recognized program designed to prepare students for success in colleges and universities. AVID students enroll in college preparatory classes and in an AVID elective class. The AVID curriculum focuses on developing the study skills and academic skills necessary for success in high school and beyond. The Harbor High School AVID program offers college preparatory activities, skill development, career building, personal mentoring, and group tutoring. Who can be in AVID? Students who are in AVID: Want to be in the program Have the potential and the desire to go to college Are serious about succeeding in school Possess individual determination and a sense of responsibility Have a 2.0-3.5 GPA Have good attendance Have a good behavior record Have average to high standardized test scores AVID students have a very high success rate . Talk to your counselor! Skill Development: You will practice skills such as note taking, organization, time management, and test-taking. You will also improve academic skills in the following areas: reading, writing, public speaking, and critical thinking. College Preparatory Activities: You will learn about a variety of colleges and universities through guest speakers, field trips, and research. You will also learn about the requirements for getting into specific colleges and universities. Personal Mentoring: Your AVID teacher will monitor your progress and help you set future goals at individual conferences. Your AVID teacher will also communicate with your other teachers and act as an advocate on your behalf. Tutoring: Twice weekly, you will work in tutorial groups with a college or student-trained tutor to go over difficult material and study for tests. Career Building: You will explore career options through research to determine what education level is required for specific careers. Regular guest speakers will share their professional experiences and careers with the class. Classroom Community: You will participate in many community building activities with you classmates, where hopefully, you will build strong relationships and learn to trust each other. You will have the opportunity to improve your interpersonal, communication and leadership skills.

Harbor Art Gallery At Harbor High , all students are encouraged to pursue artistic expression. Art is a way for students to explore problem solving, communication and the dynamics of storytelling. Art is also a window into history - helping students explore culture and the lives of ancient ancestors. and Art is a way to explore ourselves, build skill and confidence, and develop an understanding of our strengths and our perspective on the world.

Detention At Harbor High, we hold five detentions each week (see the schedule below). Each detention is 25 minutes long and is supervised by a campus supervisor, administrator, or teacher. Detentions are assigned to students for minor classroom infractions, tardiness, and other minor disciplinary issues. Once a detention is assigned, students must attend within one week unless an extension is granted by the HHS administration. Seating for detentions is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the location is the MPR. Tuesdays: 7:45am-8:10am 3:45pm-4:10pm Wednesday: 7:45am-8:10am 12:05pm-12:30pm 2:15pm-3:15pm (this block is still being finalized). *Detentions may be canceled depending on worker availability. We will do our best to notify students of cancellations.
